Shane Claiborne

Reading Irresistable Revolution by Shane Claiborne, a founder in a neo-monastic, urban commune of people mainly helping the homeless, prostitutes, and addicts around their area in Philadelphia, as well as peace efforts in Iraq and Calcutta. Very interesting, and a-propos to an emergent longing for the actual concrete dimension of all the nice thoughts and ideas. People actually doing what we daydream would be nice to do.

article in an interesting Catholic / emergent-attitude website, Busted Halo:

ya, dude. It's for real. I read about this neo-monastic thing a year or so ago...dibbs on the book when you're done. Key is being cool with being BROKE. If you want to truly be in the world but not of it, you really gotta be ok with dropping out. Like those squeegee kids of a previous blog, you just have to let go. Can we do it? Who knows...I'd love to give'er a go. Meanwhile, I'm working on my monastic calling to incorporate a skilled trade into my living "prayer" to God. If you're interested in this kind of thing, look up the Shakers from the turn of the century and also, and I know I talk about this too much, Ole Anthony and the Trinity Foundation. What I think the Simple Way gets right where a lot of others go awry is a focus on democracy within the group...no authoritarian leadership. But it's definitely an appealing take on things. Good on ya.
